Tired of parking in the mud? We can help with that!

If you’ve ever come home and had to park in the yard because the driveway’s full, you’re not alone.

This customer reached out because they needed more off-street parking and were done dealing with mud and ruts.

Solid shale base comes first
We started by excavating the area and removing all the soft topsoil. From there, we installed and compacted a shale base. This is what gives the driveway its strength and keeps it from sinking, rutting, or washing out over time.

Finished with a 2A top coat:

Once the base was solid, we topped it with 2A modified stone and compacted everything tight.

That top coat gives it a nice, clean surface that connects smoothly to their existing driveway!

Clogged Roof Drains?

Our client had tree roots plugging up his roof drains, so we dug out the old, cheap perforated drain pipe and installed solid-walled schedule 40 PVC to ensure the roots can’t plug it again..

Happy New Year From Your Local Excavator!

We here at DirtSmith, LLC look forward to another year of being your local excavator for the Northumberland County area!

I thought I would share one of my favorite projects from 2025. It was the excavation for a pole barn and retaining wall made of bin blocks.

Stripped of topsoil and ready for fill

Took over 400 tons of modified fill and a lot of rolling in-between each 8″ lift to achieve maximum compaction as we came up to our desired elevation.

Footings dug for the retaining wall
Blocks were purchased from http://Danville | Northeast Pa. | Dan-Ber Concrete & Supply https://share.google/1loMDhc75iwCzRgxx
A concrete bin block wall under construction, partially covered with a tarp, surrounded by gravel and soil, with machinery and trees in the background.

We then built this retaining wall from mafia/bin blocks to hold it all together.

Graded the topsoil and replanted the grass
4″ perforated pipe was placed behind the wall and then backfilled with 2B stone for optimal drainage.
Pole barn was built by http://Custom Pole Barn Builders | Pioneer Pole Buildings https://share.google/ZNVcELHPhd260lQNt

Once the building was up, we came back and finished the driveway with a topping of 2B’s.
